MOTHER AND FATHER ACCUSED OF BEATING, STARVING AND LOCKING UP THEIR 3 CHILDREN: POLICE

A quiet Missouri neighborhood has been rattled by one of the most disturbing child abuse cases authorities say they have seen in years. A couple — Amberly Britton and Mark A. Myers — now stand accused of subjecting their three children to conditions so horrific that investigators described the home as “unfit for human life.”

The case began unraveling in August 2025, when one of the children arrived at school with a deep, untreated laceration — an injury that should have sent any parent rushing to a hospital. Instead, police say Britton and Myers refused to seek medical care and ignored the school’s urgent requests to discuss the incident. Teachers, alarmed by the child’s silence and visible fear, contacted authorities — a call that would expose far more than anyone expected.

When investigators entered the home, they reported encountering a scene that felt “like stepping into a nightmare.” According to the probable cause statement, the house was suffocating under towering piles of clutter and reeking of ammonia-like urine. Mattresses were stripped bare, with no bedding of any kind. Every countertop, table, and floor surface was buried under dirty dishes, rotting food scraps, and debris. One officer reportedly said it looked “less like a home and more like a collapsed shelter after a disaster.”

But the most chilling discovery was in the kitchen. Cabinets and the refrigerator had been secured — not with child-proof latches, but with heavy locks, the kind typically used for storage units. Police say the locks were installed to prevent the children from accessing food, turning the kitchen into a forbidden zone inside their own home. When questioned, Britton and Myers insisted the locks were necessary to “control” how the children ate.

Authorities believe the children survived in a state of constant fear, navigating filth, isolation, and psychological manipulation. Detectives now suspect the kids may have endured long-term starvation, emotional abuse, and threats used to keep them silent.

“It is absolutely one of the worst cases we have ever seen,” said Det. Sgt. Brian Adelsberger, visibly shaken as he described the scene. “Not just the physical neglect — the psychological cruelty inflicted on these kids is something that will haunt our team for a very long time.”

The investigation, which spanned three months, uncovered patterns of abuse that prosecutors say were deliberate and systematic. Both Britton and Myers now face multiple charges of child endangerment — but officials believe more charges may be forthcoming as the children undergo further evaluations.

For now, the community waits — horrified, grieving, and wondering how such terror could unfold behind closed doors in the house next door.
