Florida is set to execute Joseph Zeer, the man convicted of murdering two women, Robin Cornell and Lisa Story, in 1990. After living freely for 26 years, Zeer was finally identified through DNA evidence linked to the gruesome crime scene. The case has haunted the Cape Coral community for over three decades.

On May 9, 1990, a mother’s simple goodnight turned into a nightmare when Jan Cornell returned home to find her daughter and friend brutally murdered. The attack shocked the quiet Cape Coral neighborhood, leaving residents in disbelief as investigators scrambled to piece together the horrific crime.
Despite having DNA evidence from the scene, the case went cold for years. Zeer, who had a long history of violence, continued to live in the area, evading capture while the community mourned the loss of two innocent lives. His life of apparent normalcy masked the dark past that would eventually catch up with him.
In 2016, a twist of fate occurred when Zeer was arrested for a separate incident involving a pellet gun. Under new Florida law, he was required to provide a DNA sample, which led to a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 match with the evidence from the 1990 murders. The Cape Coral Police Department finally had the breakthrough they had long awaited.

Zeer’s trial began in May 2023, where the prosecution presented overwhelming DNA evidence linking him to the crime. The jury deliberated for only three hours before returning a guilty verdict on two counts of first-degree murder. The courtroom erupted with emotions as Jan Cornell, the victims’ families, and the community witnessed justice served after 33 years.
As the sentencing phase commenced, the prosecution argued for the death penalty, citing Zeer’s violent history and the heinous nature of the crimes. The defense presented mitigating factors, including Zeer’s health issues and troubled upbringing, but the jury ultimately recommended death by a vote of 10 to 2.

On June 26, 2023, Judge Robert Bring sentenced Zeer to death for both murders, along with life sentences for the 𝒔𝒆𝒙𝒖𝒂𝒍 battery charges. Jan Cornell expressed her relief and gratitude, stating that justice had finally been served for her daughter and Lisa Story.
Zeer’s case is now on appeal, with his defense team challenging the jury selection process and the handling of DNA evidence. As he awaits his fate on death row, the community remains vigilant, hoping for closure after decades of pain and uncertainty.
The execution date has not yet been set, but Florida’s active death penalty process means Zeer may soon face the consequences of his actions. The haunting memories of Robin and Lisa will not fade, as their story continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of those who seek justice.
